New film from Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen) about the extraordinary friendship between the bored and ageing Queen Victoria and her young Muslim attendant. Plucked from his position as a prison clerk in Uttar Pradesh, Abdul was to present Her Maj with a ceremonial coin at Victoria’s Golden Jubilee banquet. Meanwhile, Victoria is a jaded widow of some 16 years. Could the handsome Abdul provide the delight and novelty she so needs? Partly shot in the Cairngorms – Victoria takes Abdul to the loch-side both where she had met with John Brown – their deepening friendship causes consternation among her courtiers, and her elder son, Bertie, in particular.
